Breast Thermoablation
Description
Breast thermoablation is a minimally invasive technique used to treat certain breast lesions by applying controlled heat (radiofrequency or microwave) under ultrasound guidance. It is mainly used for benign lesions, such as symptomatic fibroadenomas, and in selected patients not candidates for conventional surgery, always under individualised indication and assessment by the multidisciplinary team.
Practical Information
45-60 minutes
Fast for at least 6 hours before. Bring previous imaging studies. Inform us if you take anticoagulants, antiplatelet drugs, aspirin or anti-inflammatory drugs. Check with your doctor first: do not stop anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs on your own — this must be indicated by the professional who prescribed them.

Indications and Recommendations
- Benign lesions such as symptomatic fibroadenomas
- Patients not candidates for conventional surgery, on an individualised basis
- Selected cases assessed by the tumour board, where applicable
- Joint decision with the referring surgical and oncology team
Risks and Complications
- Pain or local discomfort after the procedure
- Superficial skin burn (uncommon)
- Bruising in the treated area
- Infection (uncommon)
- Thermal injury to nearby structures (skin or chest wall) in rare cases
- Incomplete ablation of the lesion, possibly requiring further treatment or surgery
- Need for imaging follow-up to confirm response to treatment
