Examen Diagnostique
Description
Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNAB) is a diagnostic procedure that obtains cells from a breast lesion for cytological study. It is performed under real-time ultrasound guidance, ensuring maximum precision over the lesion. It is the least invasive interventional breast procedure: it takes 15-20 minutes, requires no general anaesthesia and the patient can return to normal activity the same day.

Questions Frequentes
FNAB is a very well-tolerated procedure. It is performed with a very fine needle, similar to a blood test. You may feel a slight discomfort at the moment of puncture, but it is generally not painful. No anaesthesia is required.
The cytological result of an FNAB is usually available within 48-72 working hours. At CRMama we work with pathologists specialised in breast cytology to guarantee the highest diagnostic precision.
FNAB obtains loose cells for cytological study (cellular-level diagnosis). Core needle biopsy (CNB) or vacuum-assisted biopsy (VAB) obtains tissue cores for histological study (diagnosis with complete tissue architecture). FNAB is faster and simpler, but for suspicious solid lesions, histological biopsy is preferred for greater precision.
Ultrasound-guided FNAB is performed under real-time ultrasound control: the radiologist can see both the needle and the lesion on the ultrasound screen at all times, allowing precise puncture even of small or difficult-to-access lesions, minimising patient discomfort.
