Examen Diagnostique
Description
Core Needle Biopsy (CNB) obtains cylinders of breast tissue for definitive histological study using an automatic spring-loaded needle. It is the reference standard for histological diagnosis of suspicious solid lesions. It is performed under local anaesthesia and real-time ultrasound guidance. It provides a complete histological diagnosis (type, grade and hormonal receptors in malignant lesions) essential for treatment planning.

Questions Frequentes
CNB is performed under local anaesthesia, so the patient only feels the initial anaesthesia injection. The procedure itself is practically painless. A slight discomfort may persist for 24-48 hours, similar to a small bruise.
The histological result of CNB is usually available within 5-7 working days. In cases of clinical urgency, this can be expedited. The report includes a complete histological diagnosis and, if necessary, hormonal receptor study.
CNB is indicated when a definitive histological diagnosis is needed, especially for BI-RADS 4 or 5 lesions. FNAB provides cytological diagnosis (less information), while CNB obtains complete tissue architecture, essential for planning surgery and oncological treatments.
During CNB a small metal clip is placed in the lesion. This marker is inert and painless and serves so the surgeon can locate exactly the biopsied area in case of subsequent surgery. It does not need to be removed unless surgically indicated.
